Lil' Drummaboy Recordings

ABOUT LIL' DRUMMABOY RECORDINGS

Founded in the fall of the year 2000 in Philadelphia, Lil' Drummaboy Recordings (LDB) is the brain child of artist/producer/musician Samori Coles.  Conceived nearly four years earlier in Samori's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, the initial concept for the company was simply to be an independent record label for local recording artists.  With local hits such as "To Whom It May Concern" (featuring Mista Dre), and "No Honor, No Shame" (Samori's debut single) which hit Omaha radio in the Spring of 1997, the journey into the music business began.

In the Fall of 1997, the company moved to the East Coast.  The early years in the East were mainly focused on being competitive in the music business as an independent record label.  At the time, LDB's main priorities revolved around developing a musical sound, and the technical expertise to produce a sonic quality that would be competitive with major label releases and radio selections.  Budgetary restrictions necessitated a primarily "in-house" philosophy.  In order to support a small roster of mainly hip-hop & R&B artists with the most conservative levels of funding, the company's major support functions (i.e. recording, production, copyright concerns, etc.) had to be developed from within.

By early 2000, the company which was conceived as a record label, had begun to develop a base of studio clients who were looking for affordable studio time and original music productions (tracks/beats).  Samori was now being sought out by local Philadelphia hip-hop, R&B, and gospel artists who were attracted to his unique production style and proficiencies in sound design.  The year 2000 proved to be a pivotal year as Lil' Drummaboy Recordings was adopted as the company's official namesake, and LILDRUMMABOY.COM, the company's official website, was launched.

As professional-level recording technologies became more affordable and accessible, LDB's continued commitment to excellence and proficiency in sound design and music creation intensified. Recording programs such as Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools made it possible for home studios to produce competitive-sounding recordings.  Combined with music production software (such as Acid, Fruity Loops, Reason, etc.), These software based recording platforms allowed Lil' Drummaboy Recordings to develop core competencies that have proved to be the basis for what the company is now built upon.

Over the years, LDB's roster of artists, and musical collaborations, have included East Coast-based artists such as UVA (spoken word), Next Of Kin (hip-hop), Linda Battiste (singer-songwriter), Will Wright (jazz), Timi Tanzania (reggae, drum and bass), Hip-Soul (hip-hop, funk, jazz, soul), The Millineum Big Band (20-piece jazz, swing), Jafar Barron (jazz, progressive, soul), Russ Tate (raw soul), Lamont Caldwell (rock, alternative), Sherry Wilson Butler (soul, blues), and more.  Through such a diverse array of recording projects, LDB became known for quality in serving the musical needs and tastes of its artists, and a proficiency in both the fundamentals, as well as advanced techniques in sound design.

From 2004 - 2007 Lil' Drummaboy Recordings was afforded the opportunity to serve a residency at The Philadelphia Clef Club Of Jazz & Performing Arts, and base its studio resources and services at the Clef Club.  The Music Technology & Recording Program, a training program for audio engineering and music production, was born during this time.  Lil' Drummaboy Recordings provided this program, and with the blessings of Don Gardner, former Clef Club president and facility manager, and Lovett Hines, Clef Club Education Director, was able to integrate this soon-to-become blockbuster audio workshop series into the Philadelphia Clef Club's world-renown jazz and instrumenetal instruction program.

In September 2006, a unique opportunity was presented to LDB.  A new, upscale, soul-food restaurant called Taylor's at the Olde Mill (Norristown, PA) was opening and wanted to add a full scale entertainment component to their contemporary restaurant setting.  For nearly fifteen months, LDB provided the music programming direction for a robust, diverse and dynamic live music entertainment program to complement the culinary savviness of master chef Keith Taylor.  On multiple nights per week, Lil' Drummaboy Recordings booked more than 60 bands which ranged from jazz to blues to R&B to singer-songwriter, etc.  Studio Cafe Live, a platform for alternative indie artists of all genres, was created as a weekly stage that integrated live bands and artist performances with the internet as the major showcase vehicle.  Many of the performances at Studio Cafe Live were recorded, and the archive contains some of the richest live independent artist performances of its kind.

Today, Lil' Drummaboy Recordings' headquarters and studio facilities are located on historic South Street in one of the most diverse artistic districts in Philadelphia.  The company has remained true to its dedication to sound design through education in the sonic arts.  The Music Technology & Recording Program has evolved into a comprehensive learning laboratory that teaches the fundamentals, technologies, techniques and internet tools that help lead to more fulfilling careers in today's global, intenet and technology-driven music market.  As a Full-Service Recording Studio, LDB continues to serve the independent music market place as a provider of high-quality studio recording services.  These services include tracking, mixing, mastering, digital encoding, mix to pix, original music productions, and more.  Also, with its roots in music creation and musical collaborations, Lil' Drummaboy Recordings remains persistent with new music development.  The company is involved in a number of upcoming music releases from artists such as Hip-Soul, Rocket88, Ms. Kitty, Rafael Nunes, LILDRUMMABOY.COM and others.

Media Services (which includes CD/DVD duplication, commercial printing, live sound engineering and recording, graphic design, and video production) rounds out LDB's full range of services which make the company the optimal, affordable, one-stop solution for today's recording artist, music producer, audio enthusiast, and entertainment entrepreneur.  Plans for the future are to continue to enhance the company's audio engineering and music production workshop program; produce and record the most inspired global music releases; create new music that maintains artistic integrity; and be a complete one-stop solution for independent artists, musicians, and entertainment companies.  It's Your Future, Do What You Love -- Lil' Drummaboy Recordings.
